Italian Federation of Dancesport

History of FIDS

In 1990 ICAD (International Council of Amateur Dancing), International Federation of Dancesport, changed its name to IDSF (International Dance Sport Federation) giving clarity to its international sports federation function. In Italy, of the more than 15 existing federations, the only one to be recognized by IDSF was FIAB Federazione Italiana Amatori Ballo (Italian Federation of Amateur Dancing) which, following the change of name of the federation, changed to Feder Danza Sport Italia.

When in 1995 IDSF gained recognition by IOC (International Olympic Committee), the will to be recognised by the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) became a feasible project also in Italy.

On 6 June 1996 FIDS (Federazione Italiana Danza Sportiva or Italian Federation of Dancesport) was officially established. All the "federations" involved in the aggregation process decided to join in a single dance federation recognized by CONI. However two applications were submitted: one by FIDS, the other by FIBS (Federazione Ballo Sportivo or Federation of Sports Dancing). On 26 February 1996, the presidents of FIDS and FIBS signed an agreement at CONI with which FIBS withdrew its application, and there followed the “birth” of the only national federation representing dancesport under the aegis of CONI: the Federazione Italiana Danza Sportiva (Italian Federation of Dancesport).
On 28 February 1997, CONI’s executive board communicated the recognition of the new Federation with deliberation n. 919 as “Associated Discipline”.

On 27 December 1998, after a series of internal disputes, the first Federal Council was elected, but the way in which the elections were handled was contested by the Associations that were excluded from the vote and the Court of Rome overruled the entire operation. This decision led to the fact that the first real FIDS director was an external administrator nominated by CONI in the person of Novella Calligaris, with Carla Giuliani acting as Federal Secretary. A year and a half later the external administrator left a federation structures in the same manner as the other CONI sports federations.

On 21 January 2001 the first legitimate elections were held to nominate the new Federal Board, which elected its President Ferruccio Galvagno. In just over a month the Regional Assemblies were convened, the territorial bodies were elected and sports activities were resumed.

On 19 December 2004 celebrations were held for the new four year Olympic term with the confirmation of President Ferruccio Galvagno: during this four year period FIDS went from 22,500 members to over 100,000, and 4,000 clubs and 2,000 technicians: an exponential growth.
These efforts were rewarded by CONI, which voted unanimously for the entrance of the Italian Federation of Dancesport within the category of the National Sports Federations on 26 June 2007.

The long-awaited recognition was celebrated by FIDS athletes at the Italian Dancesport Championships of 2007, where they competed for 10 days with over 31,000 athletes. For the first time FIDS offered the Italian titles of all the sports dance disciplines in a single event, including Italian Championship of Wheelchair Dancing, organized by FIDS through an agreement stipulated with C.I.P. President Luca Pancalli.
When FIDS was founded in 1997 and was included in the category of the “Associated Disciplines”, it relied on the presence of 22,500 members throughout Italy. In the years that followed, the movement grew exponentially. In 2005 Federdanza, which in the meantime had developed its territorial bodies, relied in fact on more than 100,000 members, 4,000 clubs and 2,000 technicians. Dancesport enthusiasts, according to ISTAT data (Statistics Institute) of 2007 are continuously increasing.
