The 5th Italian medal at the Olympics comes from the ice. It is Nicola Tumolero who wins the day, achieving a bronze medal in the 10,000m ice skating speed competition at the Oval in Gangneung. The Italian athlete – attending his first Olympics and recently a European champion in the 5000m competition – finished with a time of 12'54"32, a new personal record for this distance (previous record 13'02"11), at the end of an exciting race, won by the Canadian Bloemen with the Olympic record of 12'39"77 followed by the Dutch Bergsma (12'41"98). Davide Ghiotto finished in 12th place with a time of 13'27"09. "It is incredible, an unexpected joy. 5,000m is my favourite distance, I was a little down after the first race but it was my first experience in this great competition and I was a little nervous. I competed without any expectations, only trying to do my best. What I have done will sink in in a few days".
