History of FIDAF

Costitution

In 1981, the first Italian Federation of American Football (AIFA) was established. The current Federation (FIDAF) has inherited this strong tradition, continuing over time to promote and develop American football throughout the country.
Affiliated with the IFAF (the international federation) and previously with the EFAF (replaced in 2014 by IFAF Europe), it was recognised by the CONI as a Provisional Associated Sport Discipline on 17 December 2010, as an Associated Sport Discipline on a provisional basis on 20 March 2013 and, subsequently, as a fully recognised Associated Sport Discipline on 21 December 2023.
The CONI National Council, meeting in Rome on 11 July 2024, approved the recognition of FIDAF as a National Sports Federation.
Flag football, a variant of American football, will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

Denomination

Originally founded in 1981 as the Italian Federation of American Football (AIFA), it became the Italian Federation of American Football (FIAF) from 1987 to 2002, before adopting its current name, the Italian Federation of American Football (FIDAF), in 2002.
