History of UITS

Costitution

The first association of shooting for military purposes was established in Italy, at the request of Garibaldi, following the Royal Decree of 1 April 1861 which allocated a contribution from the state for their benefit. The first national competition was held in Turin from the 21 to 27 June 1863 (with a budget for prizes of 100,000 lire).
The National Shooting Association (Tiro al Segno Nazionale - TSN) was set up by the Law of 2 July 1882 No. 883, with the aim of "providing instruction in the use of arms and cultivating the exercise of shooting." In 1894, on the initiative of Arturo Magagnini and to deal with the sporting aspects of shooting, a Central Committee of the National Shooting Association was founded in Rome (President Charles Fisogni) that, on 26 May of that year, it created the Italian Union of Shooters (Unione dei Tiratori Italiani - UTI) being elected as president Mr Luigi Roux. On 11 November 1910 the organisation was renamed the Italian Union of Rifle Shooting (Unione Italiana Tiro al Segno - UITS) and became part of the CONI in 1919.
In 1942, in accordance with the law establishing the CONI, the Union was transformed into the Italian Rifle Shooting Federation (Federazione Italiana di Tiro a Segno - FITS). On 8 July 1944, a government decree, which begins a period of receivership for the Union (which lasted until 1947), reinstated the old name. The current composition of the Board of the UITS - a chairman, five members elected by sections of TSN, a representative of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministries of Defence, of the Interior and Finance - was defined by the Minister of Defence by a decree of 24 July 1973. The Federation is listed in Law 16.02.1942, N. 426.
