The Italian team debuts with no medals at the YOG
First day of competition at the Youth Olympic Games with no medals for the Italia Team.
Fencing - Claudia Borella out for 4 in the women's foil. After having got through the round to the group stage (5th) and the eighth with the Canadian Jenny Zhao (15-6), the 16 year old of the A.S. Comini of Padua, daughter of Olympians Andrea Borella and Francesca Bortolozzi, has had to surrender to the Japanese Karin Miyawaki (15-7).
Weightlifting - Alessandra Pagliaro finishes the race, category 48 kg, in 9th position with the total of 133. The 17 year old from the Club Atletico Ercole of Caltanissetta in the sprint test missed the measurement of 64 kg. on the third lift, stopping at 61. In the next specialty, that of momentum, the Nyssian - younger sister Genny Pagliaro, gold at the European Championships in Tirana in 2013 - started from 68 kg to achieve, after two attempts, the 72 kg final.
Judo – at the Longjiang Gymnasium, in the category of 66 Kg, the Italian team's Elios Maria Manzi had to surrender against the Chinese Wu Zhiqiang. Started in the first round with a win over the Algerian Rebahi Salim, 18 year-old from Messina lost then against the Venezuelan Luis Gonzalez finishing on the repechage scoreboard. After beating the British Peter Miles, in the next combat Manzi blamed an arm injury for a forbidden technique (a lever allowed only in the fight on the ground) on the opponent, the French Jolan Florimont, which will be disqualified. The promise of Airon Judo 90 Furci Siculo, followed at the YOG by the coach Nicola Moraci, bravely tried to face the host in the quarterfinals, but there was no luck. The azzurro, already under the medical supervision of the Head of Health Care Stephen Dragoni, will undergo diagnostic tests to learn the extent of damage, even fearing a partial ligament injury.
Swimming – An excellent try by Simone Sabbioni in the semi-finals of the 100 metres backstroke. The athlete from Rimini with a personal best of 54.48, the lowest of the day, gets closer to the Italian junior record, which by the way belongs to him (54.25), by standing for a place on the podium in the tomorrow's final challenge. Ambra Esposito also qualifies in the women's 100 backstroke with the 6th time, 1:02:12. Nicolangelo Di Fabio, however, not in top form, stands down, as a precaution, in the 400 freestyle and the relay in order to concentrate on the 100 and 200.
Beach volleyball - The Italian pair Lantignotti/Enzo won the opening match, beating by two sets to zero the pair from Namibia, composed of Kim Seebach and Stephanie Palmhert.
Rowing - Arianna Manzoni finished in third placein the third heat of the individual females with a time of 3:56.16, finishing in the repechage; in the "two out" Riccardo Mager and Riccardo Peretti finished, however, with the stopwatch on 3:19.76 in the preliminaries to tomorrow's heats.
Table Tennis - Giorgia Piccolin lost the first match of Group B by 0 to 3 against the Chinese LIU Gaoyang but was promptly redeemed in the second one, with the same score, against the table tennis player from the Republic of Djibouti, Ali Salah Fatouma.
Cycling – In the Mountain Bike (XCE - Cross Country) Sofia Beggin was not successful in the semi-finals, but then dominates the final B and came in at 5th place, while Manuel Todaro, in the lead for most of the race, comes 4th in the final A. We remind you that the cycling medal is awarded to the entire team and at the end of all specialties (MTB, BMX, Road and Time Trial).
Aurora Tognetti in a stellar Opening Ceremony
"I officially declare opened the 2 edition of Youth Olympic Games". With this fateful phrase the President of China Xi Jinping has started the races. An event realized for young that will echoes in the history. At least for the Opening Ceremony, a masterpiece signed by the art director Chen Weiya, able to do better than games of Beijing 2008 and Asian games 2010. Under a boring rain and the amazed eyes of 60.000 people, Chen put up an incredible show the italians have followed live on Sportitalia. Over the official moments, like the raising of flag, the athletes oath and the speech of CIO president Thomas Bach and LOC president Li Xueyong, (Governor of Jangsu province), everything was wonderful. Even the parade of 204 delegations: starting by Greece to finish with landlords. The ensigns leading each own country! While the rest of the teams were watching the show sitting in the stadium.
For Italy Aurora Tognetti was holding the "Tricolore". Born in 1998 she is just crowned junior world champion in relay race. The YOG represents a childhood dream coming true for the almost 16 years old girl. An important chance to parade in front of the ONU General Secretary Ban Ki - moon and many other authorities. The topic was inspired to china conquest in science, arts and chinese culture and draw inspiration for incredible special effects, artistic evolutions in the sky, between huge telescopes, camels, fireworks and over. Like the one realized for the lighting of Olympic cauldron, after the last torchbearer - the award chinese olympic diving Chen Roulin (platform and Syncro 10 m.) - concluded her journey began in the Panathinaiko stadium in Athens last april 30. "The door of happiness" - that's the name of YOG 2014 torch, designed by Vatti corporation Ltd, the same company that realized the torch of Beijing. A clear proof that Beijing citizens opened to international community and young generations. By tomorrow the YOG will get in the heart of competitions until august 28, when torch will settle to Buenos Aires 2018.
The greeting by Vice President Scarso to Italian Team
This afternoon CONI Vice President Giorgio Scarso and head delegation Anna Riccardi have met the whole Team of Italy for the ritual greeting. In the little square next to the 7th of ten buildings making up the huge Olympic Village - the same reserved to 68 Italian athletes and their 26 coaches (both Andrea Russo and his coach Marco Massara, have taken flight to Rome this morning after the accident of the Italian gymnast) – the top Manager of Fencing Federation, representing in Nanjing the CONI President Malagò, has animated our guys before the competitions started. "I would like to congratulate with all of you for the qualification – said Scarso, reached by recent past champions Alessandra Sensini (Sailing), now member of the Executive board of CONI, and the Young Ambassador Elisa Santoni (Rhythmic Gymnastics) – I want all of you to remember that you represent Italy, in addition to your discipline and the Federation you belong. That's why your behavior is very important, in and out the field. Who is underestimating this match is off the track. We are talking about a very important event for your career, you have to face with the right diligence, seriousness and the right dose of anxiety that an Olympic race often requires. You are the future of Italian sport. If we think about the last edition, many athletes taking part in Singapore are joining now the Senior Teams. I wish that you could grow up by this experience, by a technical and human point of view". The FIS president has first delivered the certificate of attendance to Italian boys, than has announced that part of CONI delegation will drop by the Italian Consul in Shanghai. "Our presence here, in China, is over sport, it reflects the entire vision of our country". The head delegation Anna Riccardi, followed by her Vice Giuseppe Gianfreda and staff of Olympic programme area, feels the same too: "Our mission – she said to athletes – is that you feel part of your team. You have to be proud of your goals, because we are proud of you. We will give you the support you need to help you reaching the best and enjoying this remarkable journey". The match gets serious by tomorrow. From Italy we are going to see Irene Enzo - Michela Lantignotti during Female Beach Volley qualifications; Riccardo Peretti and Riccardo Mager in JM2- male and Arianna Mazzoni in single female of rowing; Sofia Beggin and Manuel Todaro in Mountain Bike Cross Country (XCE); Elios Maria Manzi in 66kg category Judo; fencer Claudia Borella in female foil, Alessandra Pagliaro, weight 48 kg (weightlifting) and Giorgia Piccolin in table tennis. We finally report that CIO and LOC (NYOGOC), in a recent release - in accordance to the guidelines of Medical Authority - decided that athletes from area affected by Ebola will not compete in combat sports. (2 athletes) and in the swimming sport ( 1 athlete). A preventive measure, although the risk is very unlikely, taken with WHO to guarantee the safety of all at YOG.
Saturday the YOG Opening Ceremony
Really not so much time is left and there is great anticipation. Although the second edition of YOG is already started with the soccer qualifications, the official starting will begin at 08:00 pm (02 pm italian local time) on Saturday 16 with the Opening Ceremony. After years and months of working, the LOC is really enthusiastic. More than 60.000 people is flowing in the Olympic Sports Center stadium to watch a 90 minutes event, realized by Chen Weiya, the same choreographer that put on the ceremonies of Beijing 2008 and Asiatic Games of Guangzhou 2010. The programme is absolutely top secret. Last week - far from prying eyes - there have been three dress-rehearsal for artistic, safety programme, ticketing and transport. It is sure that we are waiting for a remarkable show, as well the VIP sitting in the stadium, starting by the President of China, Xi Jinpong and the number one of CIO, the german Thomas Bach. This last one did not lose the chance to meet, today, the 3.808 young (15/18 years old) in a welcoming party organized by NYOCOG at the Olympic Village square. The party was titled "let's get together" and even the major of Nanjing joined it. In Italy the Opening ceremony will be available, live, on Sportitalia (channel 153) by Matteo Gandini. The network led by Michele Criscitiello ensured the TV rights for YOG 2014 so it will be possible watching the highlights, every day on 00:30, again on 11:00 and 16:00. We remind moreover, that you can also follow the YOG live or on demand on the several digital TV of CIO: www.olympic.tv, www.youtube.com/olympics e www.olympic.org.
