Monday Malagò and Montezemolo will unveil the logo of the 2024 bid
Rome's bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will unveil their new campaign logo on Monday in a ceremony at the Sports Palace in Piazza Apollodor, a venue made famous during Rome's last staging of the Games in 1960. CONI president Giovanni Malagò and the president of the Rome 2024 bid Committee Luca di Montezemolo will attend a show that includes performances by dancers, gymnasts and acrobats. They will explain Rome's bid and vision to an audience made up of some of Italy's most successful Olympians and 2,000 children from the city’s schools.
Following Milan's successful hosting of Expo 2015, bid President Sig Montezemolo said the ceremony marked a symbolic handover from Expo to the Olympics. "Everything that was built for the Expo, the incredible momentum that has united the country and made us win in the eyes of the world will not be lost," he said. "Now we will start again and work together with more strength and more passion to bring the Olympic Games to Rome, to give a better future to our country and to engage the future generations in this new Olympic dream, those children that in 2024 could be on track to race and win in Rome”.
Record number of candidates for IOC Athletes’ Commission elections in Rio
The IOC Executive Board (EB) this morning approved the candidatures of 24 athletes for the IOC Athletes’ Commission elections, which will be held during the Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro 2016 next August.Candidates come from all continents and are representing 14 different sports with an equal number of men and women. This great outcome owes much to the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms which have put a greater focus on athletes and the central role they have to play within the IOC and the Olympic Movement. Four seats on the Commission will become available in 2016, with current members Claudia Bokel, Dae Sung Moon, Alexander Popov and Yumilka Ruiz Luaces finishing their terms of office next summer. All athletes participating in Rio de Janeiro 2016 will be eligible to vote. After approval by the IOC Session, the four elected athletes will become IOC members for an eight-year term of office.

Malagò reveals the contents of Rome 2024: Italy is together, with a strong and credible candidature
Today, at CONI's Salone d’Onore, CONI President Giovanni Malagò held a lectio magistralis for students of Link Campus University, on the theme "Building the dossier on the Olympic candidature of Rome 2024". The event was attended by IOC member Mario Pescante, the General Coordinator for Rome 2024 Diana Bianchedi and various Federation Presidents and representatives of the sporting world.
Here follow some of the salient moments of the speech. "I would like to express my satisfaction for the entry of Diana Bianchedi in the Committee, thanking at the same time Claudia Bugno for her efforts during the months in which she worked on the project. A new and important professional path has opened up for her. Rome 2024 is being given great credibility abroad and were clearly proud of this: thanks to Giulio Onesti and my predecessors, CONI is considered a model, for its history and for the tradition that we uphold. We are the fifth nation of all times in terms of the number of Olympic medals gained, both in the summer and winter Olympic Games. The entrance of Diana confers to the candidature an even more sports-oriented connotation, following a very appreciated setup within IOC, especially in consideration of the prominent personalities connected to other candidatures: Hamburg, before its withdrawal, Paris, Budapest and partly also Los Angeles are represented by highly esteemed former champions, either directly in the Committee or indirectly amongst International Olympic Committee members. Abroad we are also singled out because our country is proposing it candidature in a spirit of unity. We are like a granite block, considering that our first supporters are President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who have not made any cuts to the sport budget, demonstrating great sensitivity and attention towards us, in addition to instituting a fund for facility design and installation in the suburbs and launching a strong signal on the ISTAT (Italian National Institute for Statistics) front. And then we have Luca di Montezemolo, who is known worldwide and has important expertise in the sporting world, from "Azzurra" at the 1990 World Cup - for which a lot of discussion was centred around tenders but he did not engage with such aspects and was praised through the many endorsements from the world of sport - until the experience with Ferrari. He is a citizen of the world and is held in great consideration.
Rome 2024 started with these premises, I promised that we would have an "in house" committee and we are the sole organisation with this status. I asked CONI Servizi to have customised premises and today our headquarters are the most fascinating within the Foro Italico Park. It is functional and fits in one of the three clusters that characterise the dossier, and this has a significant specific weight, as that of the spending review. Indeed, in the end we will be spending less than half of what our competitors will and a third less than another competitor, without forgetting the support of sponsors such as BNL, Alitalia, Unipol and others that will soon join us on this journey. On the 14th, the new logo will be launched at the Palazzetto dello Sport, with testimonials, and in the first weeks of 2016 we will go to Lausanne. The bid is built around three clusters, in public areas with no expropriations of any kind: Foro Italico Park, Tor Vergata and Fiera di Roma (Rome Fair). We reasoned that athletics, tennis and water disciplines could not coexist in the same area: for this reason, the Foro Italico will certainly host the water disciplines, following tradition. It is easier - in compliance with the dictates of the 2020 Agenda - to construct temporary structures for other disciplines. The Olympic Village will be at Tor Vergata, at the site of an unfinished construction work, destined to host around 17,000 people. We will meet Calatrava in January, with Montezemolo and Bianchedi, there is great availability to meet the needs of the candidature. The third area is Fiera di Roma, which can host fencing, weights, wrestling, boxing and maybe karate. There will then be a basin for rowing, not far from the Airport. It will be the only facility with these features aside from the seaplane base, and could potentially host also disciplines that at the moment are not part of the Olympic program. We have met all environmental associations, I am in constant contact with them, no proposal connected to the dossier has been made without their prior agreement. With a focus on refurbishment, you might have noted that nobody has raised issues of any kind. Finally there is the Velodrome issue: I support this to be final, even if Agenda 2020 allows for great flexibility. Sailing is a separate issue: we will refer the decision to an ISAF Committee, thanks to President Carlo Croce. There are two locations being considered, both with great tangible credentials.
At the moment we all have 25% chance, it would be a great mistake to underestimate the other candidatures. I think we will go to the photo-finish, head to head: we will win with the votes of the others when they drop out. The second or maybe the third vote will be the decisive one, and for this reason relations and balances are important, together with the credibility of our words and being able to keep our commitments. Someone says that the Olympic movement is in crisis. However, I have seen the figures of the television rights and if someone has made an investment 12 years in advance, they know exactly the type of product that they can get. Rome 2024 is a great bet, but we are playing it to the fullest. We are talking about 170,000 jobs during seven years from the moment of assignment to the lighting of the tripod. These are short term positions, and there will be 15,000 people that could find a professional place on the back of the Games, starting from facility management. The survey aspect: there is no will not to do it, and there is no shrewdness attached to it. Our regulations do not envisage it, but rest assured that we will not shy away from being assessed, there are sample investigations, we will go to the suburbs".

New Board of Trustees to ensure transparency in the bid
A Board of Trustees, composed of leading members of the Italian legal world, has been appointed to oversee Rome's bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The committee will be responsible for ensuring Rome's bid meets the highest international standards of transparency, operating and contractual procedures. It will also ensure the bid is fully compliant with the International Olympic Committee's rules and regulations.
In doing this the Rome 2024 bid hopes to leave a lasting legacy by setting a new benchmark for administrative standards that will be applicable to other opportunities and events in the future.
The committee is made up of some of the most senior figures in the Italian legal establishment:
- Professor Raffaele Squitieri, President of the Court of Auditors
- Professor Enzo Moavero Milanesi jurist, former Minister for European Affairs, Director of the Law School of the Luiss Guido Carli Univeristy
- Professor Giorgio Santacroce, First President of the Supreme Court
- Lawyer Livia Pomodoro, Italian jurist former President of the Court of Milan and President of the Milan Center for Food Law and Policy
- Giovanni Legnini Vice President of the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors.
The first meeting of the committee was held on Monday with CONI president Giovanni Malagò, Rome 2024 President Luca di Montezemolo, Vice President Luca Pancalli and General Coordinator Diana Bianchedi.
Award ceremony for the winners of the Literary, Sport and Journalistic Competitions. Malagò: proud of our tradition
This morning, in the Salone d'Onore at CONI's headquarters, the customary yearly award ceremony for the CONI-USSI Literary, Sport and Journalistic Competitions took place. Giovanni Malagò, President of CONI, acted as host, attending the event together with the Presidents of the examining Juries, Walter Pedullà, for the 49th Literary Competition, Gianni Letta, for the 44th Sport short story, and Luigi Ferrajolo from USSI, together with Ivana Tosatti, wife of the unforgotten Giorgio, to which the special Prize "One pen for sport" is dedicated.
The ceremony was opened by the moving commemoration of the journalists who died in 2015 and was introduced by President Malagò's opening talk. "At the beginning of my Presidency, in that moment of discontinuity with the past, I asked myself if this ceremony was necessary. In 2013, I felt it would be inelegant not to follow the previous tradition, but then I start believing in it and now I am proud to renew this tradition. Lately I have been travelling a lot and I perceive very clearly that CONI, also for these initiatives, is considered one of a kind, a model, even with all its problems. Today we have a new governance philosophy, great enthusiasm and clear ideas: Rome 2024 is a life-time chance, for the whole country: I would like to highlight this also in this occasion".
Walter Pedullà then spoke and got to the heart of the occasion, highlighting the reasons that led to awarding the prizes of the Literary Competition. "The committee that I am honoured to chair is composed of esteemed figures and I thank them all for their expertise". I cannot comment on the Technical section, won by the work of Carlo Vittori, as I do not have the competence to make a judgement: I relied on the judgement of my colleagues. Giuseppe Culicchia won the Fiction section, with "Ma in seguito a rudi scontri" ("But following rough clashes"), thanks to an unpredictable and incisive style, full of audacity and imagination. The second prize went to Angelo Carotenuto, for a pleasant and balanced novel, from a literary perspective, which stands out because of the vivid imagination of the author. A special mention to Franco Esposito, who gifted us with an original piece of work. The first place in the Essay section is shared equally by Gaia Piccardi and Italo Cucci. The latter has written an autobiography that introduces us to a carousel of characters encountered during his life path. It is a book to be read all in one go, with plot twists and humour, an entertaining walk through his life. Gaia Piccardi, instead, recounted her "Tour de France", demonstrating great plasticity in crafting words together, with an eye-catching prose, never commonplace. A special mention goes to Enrico Querci, author of a tale with a happy ending. A special mention also to Marco Pastonesi and his book about Alfredo Martini, for his ability to represent vividly the ascent of a man of humble origins who was able to conquer the cycling world".
Gianni Letta took over to present the works that won the Sport Short Story award, giving a special introduction. "I wish to thank President Malagò for his words addressed at me. We will be close to him in this challenge called Rome 2024: Malagò will provide the added value needed to gather the IOC votes, with his typical charm, pleasantness and credibility. I thank Novella Calligarisi for the earnestness, expertise and diligence with which she guided the Committee, the same passion with which she won the silver medal at the Olympic Games. This year we noticed a lower average quality compared to the previous year, and no under-18 short story deserved our consideration: for this reason, we changed the scope of the competition, opening it to new technologies. However, we singled out four texts amongst the works received, four gems, not only for their quality but because they captured the aims of the Prize, which has the intent of promoting competitive sport practice combining it with the values that represent its foundations. The wonderful work by Torromeo tells of the social engagement of a boxer, mortally killed in an ambush, who goes through his entire career and remembers the punch that marked the end of his career: through this edifying tale we understand how without sacrifices and without effort one does not reach the finishing line: sport gives us a life lesson. The second prize was awarded to Susanna Scarperi, amateur writer, thanks to a beautiful and original short story, which could become the anti-doping manifesto. The two special mentions go to Lorenzo Teodoro and Christian Poli, and are well deserved for their originality and imagination: they skilfully narrate dreams and metaphors".
Luigi Ferrajolo, President of USSi, wanted to celebrate the winner without forgetting to mention the difficulties faced by this category. "Each year I am forced to renew my concern for a sector facing serious difficulties, I am sorry to voice this cry of alarm in a day of celebration. Television is forcefully taking away our role, for this reason it is good that this Prize survives, because we also have our pearls, behind an army in great difficulty". Great excitement also for the prize "A pen for sport", won by Gianni Romeo, who wanted to dedicate his testimony to the masters Antonio Ghirelli and Giorgio Tosatti, to whom the award is dedicated.
Project "EduCare SPORT" in partnership with BNL: athletes train for tomorrow
Today, in CONI's Salone d'Onore, BNL, part of the BNP Paribas Group, in collaboration with CONI, presented "EduCare Sport", the national training program dedicated to former athletes and athletes at the end of their career, to help them make ever more conscious financial choices and follow them in their professional and entrepreneurial projects. The initiative was explained by Luigi Abete and Giovanni Malagò, Presidents of BNL and CONI, respectively. EduCare Sport fits within the context of the partnership between BNL and CONI, signed last May, which envisages the development of activities and projects aimed at supporting sport at different levels, to encourage entrepreneurial ideas and further spread sport culture, which contributes not only to the physical and mental well-being of individuals, but also to the development of a society that is more and more oriented to the common good and to respect between people.
The program entails a series of free meetings on themes related to "after-career", to train participants on economic, financial and motivational topics: the sustainability of a business plan will be discussed, as possible forms of credit and tools to support entrepreneurship. In this context, the potential of microcredit will also be explored, thanks to the "PerMicro" experience, a leader company in the sector, of which BNL is shareholder and industrial partner. Furthermore, thanks to a specific module organised by CONI, one will emphasise the importance of the sense of challenge and constancy of effort, typical of sportsmen, as necessary features to reach new professional aims. The initiative is part of a vaster financial education program called EduCareBNL, started in 2008, which so far has reached more than 230,000 people and 8,000 firms, in more than 5,000 events across all Italy.
Malagò highlighted with pride the content of the project: "EduCare Sport goes in the right direction, because it is a project that tackles one of the big problems of the sporting world. The theme is: what must one do as a grown up? In this direction, BNL gives athletes the tools to face the future in an effective and optimistic way and for this reason it must be complimented. Athletes, thanks to this initiative, will be able to play the business activity card, escorted in a concrete and practical way, along a training path. BNL, indeed, wants to take athletes by the hand, giving them trust, in a courageous and innovative way: I am sure that one will talk of this project abroad and that from here many success stories will begin. CONI goes beyond its statutory mission and rises to the occasion, together with what is unanimously considered the bank of sport, in a path that, for its significance, ennobles our whole Country. I am sure that for the champions involved it will be an exciting competition, destined to surpass the successes obtained during their career".
Luigi Abete expanded on the topic from BNL's point of view: "The collaboration between CONI and BNL goes back to the beginning of time and today has been strengthened because of the interest shown by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) in developing this initiative to escort athletes to their future and we put ourselves on the first line in this project. As a bank, our culture is trained towards an open society, which embraces the values heralded by sport. We launched a series of initiatives to support the competitive sports arena, promoting it with a friendly and involved participation. Firms must be transparent: our headquarters, which, from 2017, will be close to the Tiburtina Station, are just that. Educare è sport is the fourth area of the project, which involves students, citizens, firms and sportsmen. I agree with Malagò when he says that this must be a mass operation. The aim is to enter the sporting world offering an opportunity to whom, in the sporting world, has some issues when considering his or her future direction. We will do what a firm must do: build projects around the person in question, with a strong identity".
At CONI's Salone d'Onore, successful athletes also intervened, athletes who became entrepreneurs or managers, chosen as "special sponsors" of EduCare Sport, to tell their own experience. Alberto Nobis, former European champion for the volley team, is now the managing director for DHL; furthermore, the winners of Olympic golden medals Jury Chechi (gymnast) and Domenico Fioravanti (swimmer), are entrepreneurs in different sectors, as is the former member of the Italian rugby team, Fabio Ongaro. Marisa Muzio, former member of the Italian national swimming team, now sport psychologist, also intervenes, talking about the many aspects that are important for former athletes when taking on new professional challenges; she will bring her contribution also during the seminars.
The EduCare Sport calendar is packed with events, a real road show between Milan, Treviso, Bologna, Formia and Rome: BNL and CONI premises and important Italian sport facilities will all be involved. The first encounter will take place in mid-January, while the final appointment will occur in the context of "Italy's BNL Internationals", scheduled at the Foro Italico next May. Sporting world testimonials will be provided by athletes connected to the place in which each single stop will take place. The full information is available on the educare.bnl.it website.
During the meeting, BNL also presented the competition "'#Alleniamoildomani" ("Training our tomorrow"), through which one can win a journey to Rio de Janeiro to see the Olympics. The only requirement is to upload an original photo on the website alleniamoildomani.it (from the beginning of December to mid May 2016), in which the protagonist is portrayed during a sporting activity, wearing shoes with the special shoelaces created specifically for the competition and coloured like the Olympic rings. The laces will be distributed from December during CONI and BNL events over the whole of Italy. The photos will be voted by the users of the site alleniamoildomani.it. The competition fits within the recent partnership where BNL is sponsoring CONI for the Olympic Games of Rio 2016.
BNL and CONI already enjoy a collaboration that has lasted for more than 70 years, sharing a story that is made of epic events. To quote the most significant: the Rome 1960 Olympic Games and the World Football Championship "Italia '90"; the sponsorship for the Winter Olympics at Nagano in 1998, the "BNL Cerchi e stelle" (BNL Circles and Stars) project, supporting five female athletes of the Italian National team (Erica Alfridi, Deborah Gelisio, Josefa Idem, Ylenia Scapin and Alessandra Sensini) at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Furthermore, BNL is the partner of 44 Sport Federations and the Bank of the Italian Paralympic Committee and of the main Federations connected to it. In the context of the partnership between BNL and CONI, recently it also launched the "Prestito BNL W lo Sport" (Hurray for Sport BNL bank loan), to support individuals and families in the expenses for sporting activities, offering advantageous conditions.
Presentation of the 2014 sustainability report. Malagò: we must be a model of efficiency and transparency
CONI has officially presented the 2014 sustainability report, during the celebrations for the 60-year anniversary of the Olympic preparation centre in Formia. This is an initiative that was born last year to report back to all stakeholders the results obtained on the economic, social and environmental fronts. The second edition of the report is in line with the governance strategic model - aimed at sustainability - by which CONI operates, also thanks to the work of Coni Servizi. The work, presented with the participation of Teresa Zompetti, Head of CONI's Corporate Social Responsibility team, summarises the challenges that the Organisation has faced, the operating style that characterises its activities and the attention given to the people that allow its aims to be reached.
Malagò has emphasised the importance of this turning point, announced in the electoral program that brought him to become President of the Organisation and pursued with success. "I am happy that the report is presented in Formia, with the attendance of many members of the Board and National Council: it provides a snapshot of a different CONI, which keeps up with the times; abroad I receive a lot of compliments for our heritage, for what we are doing, and for our plans for the future. There are some fundamental guiding principles: high standards, as we are in this splendid centre for Olympic Preparations; there is then the social theme, which opens to the world of the Promotion Agencies, the other important side of our medal. And then there is the big topic of our presence in the territory, followed by governance and transparency. I hope I am acting as a good President and I wish that Board and Council rise up to the challenge, as well as managers and employees. I am proud of an important figure: we have 11 less people working for us compared to last year, we are rationalising our administration, there are more women than men and more young people compared to a year ago, and we want to continue in this direction. Regardless of the judgement on my personal accomplishments, no one can question the will to run this organisation as if we were an open book. The issue of transparency is at the core of our beliefs: everybody must notice our uniqueness, starting with the stakeholders we communicate with: they respect us a lot and believe in what we are doing. Finally, there is the care towards each individual. Everyone knows that there are no discriminations or favouritisms. We must be a model: when I leave I hope to have the certainty I developed a philosophy for other sectors of the public administration.
Formia celebrates 60 years. Malagò: a foundation of excellence upon which to build the future
This morning, Giovanni Malagò, President of CONI, together with Carlo Mornati, Deputy Secretary General and Head of Olympic Preparations, took part in the celebration of the 60 years of the Olympic Preparations Centre (CPO) in Formia. Instituted in 1955, thanks to an intuition of Bruno Zauli, to favour the growth of athletes and coaches in the field of competitive sports, the Centre is equipped with outdoor and indoor facilities, where more than 20 sport disciplines can be practised throughout the year. Various Federation Presidents and many representatives of CONI's local organisations attended the conference, together with Amar Addadi, President of the CIJM (International Committee of Mediterranean Games).
The event opened with two symbolic moments: Piazza del CPO (CPO square), will be pedestrianised and change its name to “Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro” (Golden Medals square), while the Viale (avenue) was named after Pietro Mennea, unforgotten Olympic athlete, who precisely in Formia built some of his most significant victories. The wife of the former 200-metre sprinter, Manuela, and his long-time coach, Carlo Vittori, were present at the event.
Malagò gave the official welcome. "Formia represents the height of Italy's sporting system and it is not thanks to me or to CONI's current top management. It is thanks to many of people in attendance today and to many that have left us. I give thanks to mayor Bartolomeo for his welcome and to Davide Tizzano, who runs the centre with care and passion. I give thanks to all people who felt this place as their home over the last 60 years, not only to those involved in athletics, which is still the most important discipline in the centre. I am happy and excited to see and hug Manuela Mennea and Carlo Vittori for the emotional moments Pietro gifted us, and Sara Simeoni, athlete of the century representing all the exceptional champions who passed through Formia. The celebration of the past and of who wrote history is important, but even more important is to plan a winning future, and this place offers the foundation to think big. Here many athletes, even foreigners, have become champions".
The mayor of Formia, Sandro Bartolomeo, spoke of the pride the city has for the Centre, which is a reference point in the sporting world. "I think that in 1955, when Bruno Zauli founded this school, no one could have imagined what it was going to become. Formia's name has toured the world due to the results and fame acquired thanks to athletes that built their successes here".
Carlo Mornati, CONI's Deputy Secretary and Head of Olympic Preparations, expanded on the concept. "The 60 years of this facility represented an occasion to bring you here, to celebrate a model and a view of living the sporting experience. Our Olympic preparation centres are a feather in our cap when the competitive sports movement is mentioned abroad, and this makes us proud. The Acqua Acetosa sport centre (based in Rome) is in the spotlight, whereas Formia and Tirrenia are nearly at the periphery. I am happy that the care given to the centres has been rewarded, many disciplines make use of it, together with the many athletes of Club Italia. Formia does not only stand for future, but I believe and I hope that it stands for a great present moment, as we prepare for the Rio Games".
Sara Simeoni spoke on behalf of the athletes, as athlete of the Century. "Formia has not only represented a springboard, but also a home, a place where to build successes and grow in the field of competitive sports. It has been an irreplaceable travel companion, I experienced indelible emotions, which I keep in the collection of my most beautiful memories". Many champions of the past participated in the event, a vivid testimony to the special relationship that connects Formia to the world of the five-circle movement, the Olympics. President Malagò then visited the centre and greeted the athletes that were present.
